Many are unable to identify basic plants and carry out simple outdoor tasks.
Nearly a quarter of adults have never mown a lawn and 36 per cent have never trimmed a hedge.
Half (53 per cent) of the 1,500 adults polled couldn’t identify a geranium and four in 10 didn’t know the name of a pansy.
A spokesman for Fiskars garden firm, which did the study, said: “Everyone has to start somewhere.”
