1. Prune for top pick

You will improve next year’s apple crop on cordon and walltrained plants if you prune back the side shoots to only five leaves, or about 15cm, from their base. Later, trim any shoots that sprout from these back to just one leaf.

Plant colchicums, also known as naked ladies, and the autumn crocus, Crocus speciosus, in small groups in the front of shrub borders for autumn.

3. Raise the dead

Deadhead roses to encourage more blooms. Cut off the spent flowers just above a leaf joint as this is the point from which new flower shoots will sprout.
