A Dickens of a mess in our packed jails

NO wonder there’s so much unrest in our jails.

Prisons minister Sam Gyimah reveals that ten years ago there were 23,780 officers keeping order in England’s jails. Now there are 17,500.

For every 100,000 men in the country in 1901 there were 152 male prisoners. That now stands at 355.

Looks like law and order was better in Jenna Coleman’s... sorry, Queen Victoria’s... day.
