Mountains of rubbish

-

A CLEAN-UP campaign is aiming to clear Mount Everest of 100 tonnes of rubbish left behind by climbers and tourists.

On the first day, 2,645lb of junk was airlifted from the 29,029ft mountain, the world’s highest.

Visitors are supposed to bring their trash back down with them but every year Sherpas collect hundreds of sackfuls of garbage.

This year’s efforts are focused on recycling.

Most of the litter is empty beer bottles and cans, empty food tins and discarded mountaineering and trekking equipment, including oxygen bottles.

The waste was flown from Lukla airport to Kathmandu.
