SOURDOUGH’S ON THE RISE
SOURDOUGH bread has become the UK’s newest supermarket superstar, with demand soaring by 40 per cent in a year.
Tesco is selling 100,000 loaves a week, saying the bread once only found in artisan bakeries is now mainstream.
It is introducing sourdough baguettes to meet the growing demand, d, alongside gluten-free varieties, rolls and pitta bread.
Sourdough is one of the oldest breads, using natural yeast and getting flavour from long fermentation. Tesco bakery buyer Alice McConnell said: “Interest in this wonderfully tangy, chewy bread has grown spectacularly. “For those who have still not tried it yet, there is nothing quite like the taste of hot, toaste toasted sourdough and butter.” Shoppers shunning sliced white lo loaves have boosted Britain’s speciality bread market’s value to £123million-a-year.
