All our coppers must be saved

-

THERESA May has saved our coppers. Treasury plans to bin 1p and 2p pieces were reversed after a public outcry.

Chancellor Philip Hammond said 60 per cent of the coins are used only once then stashed in bottles and piggy banks – so the Royal Mint has to issue 500 million every year.

But charities feared scrapping them would hit collection boxes, and amusement arcades would face huge losses.

So the PM said: “No change”. Great. While you’re at it, why not save our more valuable coppers too? The ones battling a 14 per cent spike in crime caused by the Government axing police numbers by 21,000 since 2010.

Gun and knife attacks, robberies, burglaries and sexual offences are all up after officer numbers hit an historic low of 121,929.

“The result of cutting police officers and funding is a rise in crime,”says Police Federation boss Andy Fittes.

Mrs May, stop taking the p.
