1. Best for a bog

Turn a leaky pond into a bog garden. Empty the water then pierce holes in the liner and fill it with soil. It will then support moisture-loving plants such as hostas, astilbe, primulas, Caltha, ligularia and yellow flag irises.

2. Fertiliser soup

Make nutrient-rich fertiliser from young comfrey stems and leaves. Cut off and crush the foliage and steep in a tub of water for four weeks to make a liquid which can be diluted 1:10 in a watering can and used on maturing plants.

3. Up the wall

Use wall planters to clad a wall with greenery. This trend is a good use of space and planters can house herbs or flowers.
