WE WARNED THE NATION

-

THE Sunday People first warned of the care homes ticking time bomb 91 days ago.

Campaigners and MPS have paid tribute to how we led the way in exposing failures by government that cost thousands of lives.

Our front page on April 5, left, told how the spread of Covid-19 in old people’s residences would lead to widespread death.

We highlighted the lack of personal protective equipment and adequate testing in them. Soon afterwards we wrote of demands for a “ring of steel” around care homes and also how whistleblowers faced the sack for raising concerns like ours.

Other national newspapers followed us in warning the nation of the growing peril.

Lib Dem MP Layla Moran, who leads an all-party group demanding a public inquiry into Covid-19 failures, said: “The Sunday People’s campaign played a vital role in shining a light on the care homes crisis and putting pressure on the Government to act.”

Care England praised our “pivotal role in raising awareness of care homes’ plight”.
