Keir is not diary hunk

- By Karen Rockett

BRIDGET Jones writer Helen Fielding has finally set the record straight and said Mark Darcy is not based on Sir Keir Starmer.

There have long been rumours that the reserved lawyer played in films by Colin Firth was inspired by ex-barrister Sir Keir.

But the Bridget Jones’s Diary author has now denied any link between her heroine’s love interest and the Labour leader, 57.

Starmer said in January he was “flattered” by the comparison to actor Firth.

Fielding added on BBC Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs that diarist Bridget was more based on herself than she had admitted.

The 62-year-old said: “I always denied she had anything to do with me. But of course she was very close to me in some ways.”

Desert Island Discs is on BBC Radio 4 today at 11am, and on BBC Sounds.
