Knitting: make a stylish top in a luxury yarn

This luxurious top is worked in a merino and silk yarn which has been hand-dyed to create a multi-tonal effect.

st-st – stocking-stitch

(K1 row, P1 row);

selvedge st – purl first st and knit last st tbl (through back of loop) on all rows;

SKPO – slip 1, K1, pass slipped st over;

st(s) – stitches;

tog – together.

Important Note

Directions are given for five sizes. Figures in brackets refer to the four larger sizes. Figures in square brackets [ ] refer to all sizes and are worked the number of times stated. When writing to us you must enclose an SAE if you would like a reply.

BACK

Note – Wind yarn into balls before you begin.

All rows begin and end with a selvedge stitch (see abbreviati­ons).

With 3.5 mm needles cast on 114 (120, 126, 132, 138) sts.

Rib row – 1 selvedge st,

K1, P1, rep from to last st, 1 selvedge st. This row forms the rib. Work another 2 rows in rib, thus ending after a wrong-side row.

Change to 4 mm needles and beg with a knit row, cont in st-st until back measures 34 (35, 36, 37, 38) cm, ending after a wrong-side (purl) row.

Shape armholes – Cast off 3 (4, 4, 5, 5) sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 2 sts at beg of next 8 rows – 92 (96, 102, 106, 112) sts.

Dec row – 1 selvedge st, K2tog, knit until 3 sts rem, SKPO, 1 selvedge st.

Next row – Purl

Work from to five times more – 80 (84, 90, 94, 100) sts.

Next row – As dec row.

Work three rows in st-st as set. Rep the last four rows 1 (1, 2, 2, 3) time(s) more – 76 (80, 84, 88, 92) sts.

Cont straight until armhole measures 21 (22, 23, 24,

25) cm, ending after a wrong-side row.

Shape neck – Knit 20 (21, 22, 23, 24) sts, turn, leaving rem sts on needle or stitchhold­er.

Working on these 20 (21, 22, 23, 24) sts only, cast off 4 sts at beg (neck edge) of next row, then 3 sts at beg of foll alt row – 13 (14, 15, 16,

. 17) sts.

Cast off 2 sts at beg of foll alt row, then 1 st at beg of next alt row – 10 (11, 12, 13,

14) sts.

Cont straight until armhole measures 24 (25, 26, 27,

28) cm ending at armhole edge.

Slip rem 10 (11, 12, 13,

14) sts on to a stitch-holder. With right side facing, slip centre 36 (38, 40, 42, 44) sts on to a stitch-holder, rejoin yarn to rem sts, knit to end. Complete to match first side, reversing shapings.

FRONT

Work as given for back until armhole measures 17 (18,

19, 20, 21) cm ending after a wrong-side row.

Shape front neck – K27

(28, 29, 30, 31) sts, turn, leaving rem sts on needle or stitch-holder.

Working on these 27 (28, 29, 30, 31) sts only, cast off 3 sts at beg of next row and 2 foll alt rows – 18 (19, 20, 21,

22) sts.

Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 3 foll alt rows – 12 (13, 14, 15, 16) sts.

Cast off 1 st at beg of foll alt row and then foll 4th row – 10 (11, 12, 13, 14) sts.

Cont straight until armhole measures 24 (25, 26, 27,

28) cm ending at armhole edge.

Slip rem 10 (11, 12, 13,

14) sts on to a stitch-holder. With right side facing, slip centre 22 (24, 26, 28, 30) sts on to a stitch-holder, rejoin yarn to rem sts, knit to end. Complete to match first side, reversing shapings.

SLEEVES

With 3.5 mm needles cast on 66 (66, 74, 74, 82) sts.

1st row – 1 selvedge st, K2,

P4, K4, rep from until

7 sts rem, P4, K2, 1 selvedge st.

2nd row – 1 selvedge st, P2,

K4, P4, rep from until 7 sts rem, K4, P2, 1 selvedge st.

3rd row – As 1st row.

4th row – 1 selvedge st, P2,

C2F, P4 , rep from until 7 sts rem, C2F, P2,

1 selvedge st.

5th row – As 1st row.

6th row – As 2nd row.

7th row – As 1st row.

Rep 4th - 7th rows until sleeve measures approx. 11 cm ending after a 7th row.

Change to 4 mm needles.

Beg with a knit row, cont in st-st, inc 10 (14, 10, 14,

10) sts evenly across first row – 76 (80, 84, 88, 92) sts. Cont straight in st-st until sleeve measures 23 cm, ending after a wrong-side row.

Shape sleeve top – Cast off 3 (4, 4, 5, 5) sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 2 sts at beg of next 8 rows – 54 (56, 60, 62, 66) sts.

Dec row – 1 selvedge st, K2tog, knit until 3 sts rem, SKPO, 1 selvedge st.

Next row – Purl

Work from times more.

Next row – As dec row.

Work three rows in st-st as set. Rep the last four rows 7 times more then work from to

2 (3, 3, 4, 4) times more – 22 (22, 26, 26, 30) sts. Cast off 2 sts at beg of next 2 (2, 4, 4, 6) rows – 18 sts.

Cast off.

Join shoulders – Slip each set of shoulder sts on to a 4 mm needle. Place back and front with right sides facing each other and needle points level. Using an extra 4 mm needle, and beg at armhole edge, cast off both sets of sts at same time, taking one st from 1st needle with correspond­ing st from 2nd needle.

Neckband – With 3.5 mm circular needle and right side facing, beg at right shoulder seam, pick up and knit 13

(13, 13, 13, 13) sts down right back, knit across 36 (38, 40, 42, 44) sts on holder, pick up and knit 13 (13, 13, 13, 13) sts up left back, pick up and knit 26 (26, 26, 26,

26) sts down left front, knit across 22 (24, 26, 28, 30) sts on holder, pick up and knit knit 26 (26, 26, 26, 26) sts up right front – 136 (140, 144, 148, 152) sts.

1st round – K1, P1, rep from to end.

Cont in rib as set for a further 2 rounds.

Cast off in rib.

To Make Up – Sew in sleeve tops, join side and sleeve seams within selvedge st. Weave in ends.

Block the garment to the correct measuremen­ts and cover with a damp cloth and leave to dry.
