Plockton, with its close neighbours Drumbuie and Duirinish, is part of the large Balmacara Estate where traditional crofting is still the way of life. You might well meet a herd of Highland cattle taking a wander or lying down in the middle of the road for a nap. It’s a stressful job, after all, posing for the tourists all day!
It was thanks to Sir Alex Matheson that the West Highland Railway line was extended from its railhead at Stromeferry to Kyle of Lochalsh. Of course, it was only fair that in return Duncraig should be given its own private station.

Plockton found fame as the Scottish town of Lochdubh in the TV series “Hamish Macbeth”, starring Robert Carlyle.
