When To Water?
The most effective way to water a lawn is to use sprinklers. There are a number of different designs, so ask your local garden centre for advice based on the size and shape of your lawn. As grass plants have relatively shallow, fibrous roots, you might think they would need a small amount of water just to keep them moist, but this could not be further from the truth – grass plants actually rely on a large reservoir of water so it is always better to occasionally keep that topped up. Aim to soak to at least four inches below the surface and water in the evening to minimise evaporation. Be aware that overwatering encourages shallow rooting. Finally, remember to check there are no hosepipe bans in operation.
