Crochet Winston the Bear – a welcome addition to any home
Crochet this delightful little fellow for family and friends.
MATERIALS
2 50-gram balls of Rico Essentials Cotton DK in Nougat (78) M, and 1 ball in Beige (91) C; few metres of Black (90) and a contrast colour for the bow tie – we used Gold (26); 3.25 mm crochet hook; toy stuffing; large-eyed needle.

TENSION
10 dc and 12 rows measured over 5 cm x 5 cm, using a 3.25 mm crochet hook.

Note: Most pieces are worked in the round. When joining each round, sl st to first dc, work 1 ch (which is not counted as a st), then always work the first dc of the following round in the same st at base of 1 ch. This will maintain the correct number of stitches.
Body – With M, make 2 ch.

Paw pads (2) – With C, make 2 ch.

Feet Pads (2) – With C, make 2 ch.

Bow – Make 26 ch.
1st row – 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each ch to end, turn – 25 dc.
2nd & 3rd rows – 1 ch, 1 dc in each dc to end, turn. Fasten off.
Tie – Make a chain long enough to go around your teddy’s neck, 1 dc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 dc in each ch to end. Fasten off.
To Make Up – Stuff head, leaving base open. Seam runs down the back of the head and body. Stuff muzzle and sew to front of head. Place nose towards top of muzzle, sew in place. Embroider a line from the centre of base of nose to the chin. Using photo as a guide, embroider eyes using black yarn. Press the ears flat and form them into a cup shape. Sew in place. Stuff body firmly. Place head on to body and sew in place. Stuff arms, not too firmly. Sew paw pads on. Stitch claws through the pads and arms. Attach arms to body on either side at shoulder level. Stuff the legs, pushing plenty of stuffing into the foot to give a rounded shape. Sew foot pads in place then embroider claws in the same way as the arms. Sew the legs to the body, remembering the bear is in a sitting position. Join the short ends of the bow and fold the piece in half with the seam at the centre back. Weave a thread through the centre and gather up to form a bow shape. Place the tie around the bear’s neck, attach the bow to the front of it and secure with a few stitches. n
