■ In 1981 an event was undertaken by local school pupils and adults called “Hands Around The Wrekin”, whereby a large group of people all held hands, surroundin­g the hill at the base, in an attempt to break the record for the longest human chain.

■ Nash, near Wrockwardi­ne, is believed to have been wiped out entirely by the Black Death. It now no longer exists and is described as an abandoned village.

■ The very rare Old Man of the Woods toadstool, limited to a handful of places in Britain, can be found in Ercall Wood.

■ By road, the M54 motorway ends less than a mile from the main car park. By rail, Wellington Station is just over half a mile’s walk from Ercall Wood. By bus, local services by Arriva run regularly from Telford to Wellington town centre.
