Cornishware is said to be named because one employee remarked that the bands made him think of the blue sea and its white crests on the waves in Cornwall. The pottery did, in fact, use clay from Cornwall, but as the coal used in the pottery production was practically right next door in Derbyshire, it was cheaper to bring the clay to the coal!
