Next row – Purl, dec 4 (4,6,6,8,8) sts evenly across row – 101 (111, 123, 133, 145, 155) sts.

Change to 4 mm needles and beg with a knit row, work in st-st until back measures same as fronts to armhole shaping, ending after a purl row. Shape armholes – Cast off 5 (6,7,9, 10, 11) sts loosely at beg of next 2 rows – 91 (99, 109, 115, 125, 133) sts. Dec 1 st at each end of next 5 (5,5,7,7,7) rows, then on every following alt row until 77 (83, 89, 97, 103, 109) sts remain.

Work straight until back measures same as fronts to shoulder shaping, ending after a purl row.

Shape shoulders – Cast off 6 (6,7,8,8, 9) sts loosely at beg of next 6 rows, then 6 (8,7,7,9,8) sts at beg of next 2 rows – 29 (31, 33, 35, 37, 39) sts.

Slip sts on a stitch-holder.

SLEEVES

With 3.25 mm needles cast on 43 (45, 47, 49, 51, 53) sts and work in rib as on right front for 5 cm, ending after a 2nd row. Change to 4 mm needles and beg with a knit row, work in st-st, inc 1 st at each end of first row, then on every following 8th (6th, 6th, 4th, 4th, 4th) row until there are 55 (51, 69, 59, 73, 87) sts, then on every following 10th (8th, 8th, 6th, 6th, 6th) row until there are 67 (73, 79, 87, 93, 99) sts.

Work straight until sleeve measures 44 cm from beg, ending after a purl row. Shape top – Cast off 5 (6,7,9, 10, 11) sts loosely at beg of next 2 rows – 57 (61, 65, 69, 73, 77) sts.

Work 0 (0,0,2,2,2) rows straight.

Dec 1 st at each end of next row and every following knit row until 27 (31, 33, 37, 41, 43) sts remain, then on every row until 17 (21, 23, 27, 31, 33) sts remain.

Cast off loosely.

TO COMPLETE

Join shoulder shapings. Borders and neckband– With 3.25 mm needles, cast on 7 sts for left border and rib as on right front until strip, when slightly stretched, fits up left front edge, ending after a 2nd row. Slip sts on a length of yarn and leave.

Mark position on left border for 5 buttons, top one level with top of lower panel, and remaining 4 spaced with approx. 8 rows between each below the top one.

Work right border as left border, but ending after a 1st row, without breaking yarn, and working 5 buttonhole­s to match markers, thus: Buttonhole row – K2, P2tog, [yarn round needle] twice, P1, K2.

Next row – As 2nd rib row but purling once only into the double yarn round needle. Using needle holding the 7 sts of right border, with right side facing, pick up and knit 32 (35, 38, 39, 43, 45) sts evenly round right front neck, knit across 29 (31, 33, 35, 37, 39) sts on stitch-holder, pick up and K32 (35, 38, 39, 43, 45) sts evenly round left front neck, rib across 7 sts on yarn – 107 (115, 123, 127, 137, 143) sts.

1st row – K1, [P1, K1] to end.

2nd row – K2, [P1, K1] to last st, K1.

Rep the last 2 rows twice more. Cast off firmly in rib.

To Make Up – Press sleeves and back only. Sew on borders. Sew in sleeves. Join side and sleeve seams. Sew on buttons. Press seams. n
