The traditiona­l Shetland shawl has been given a contempora­ry twist with the clever use of colour.

MATERIALS

4 25-gram balls of Jamieson & Smith Shetland Natural Heritage in Black (note this is a very dark brown), 2 balls each in Dark Grey, Moorit and Fawn and 1 ball each in Light Grey and White. 4.5 mm (No. 8) circular knitting needle in 80 cm and 60 cm lengths; set of double-pointed needles in sizes 3.5 mm (No. 9) and 4 mm (No. 8). TENSION

30 sts and 35 rows to 10 cm measured over stocking-stitch using 3.5 mm needles.

BORDER LACE

With 4.5 mm needle and Black, cast on 10 sts very loosely.

1st row – S1p, K1, ctc, K6. 2nd and every alt row

– S1p, knit to end.

3rd row – S1p, K1, [ct] twice, c, K5.

5th row – S1p, K1, [ct] 3 times, c, K4.

7th row – S1p, K1, [ct] 4 times, c, K3.

9th row – S1p, T, [ct], 4 times, K3.

11th row – S1p, T, [ct], 3 times, K4.

13th row – S1p, T, [ct] twice, K5.

15th row – S1p, TCT, K6. 16th row – S1p, knit to end. These 16 rows form 1 scallop and are worked continuous­ly until 72 scallops have been completed. Graft together caston sts and the sts from the last row of the border lace, note 72 scallops = 576 sts.

CENTRE

Note: Always mark the end of the round as you work the shawl.

With 4.5 mm longer needle and Black, pick up 576 sts from the straight edge of the border lace and knit 1 row through the back of the sts and put in a marker at the end of the round.

TO COMPLETE

Weave in any loose ends. Wash by hand in lukewarm soapy water then roll up in a towel to absorb excess moisture.

Stretch out to dry away from heat or sun, on a shawl frame or pin out scallops at points on to a white sheet and then dry flat. n
