Knit this cabled sweater in an aran yarn

Our pretty cabled sweater is worked in an aran-weight yarn.

MEASUREMEN­TS

To fit sizes, 81/86 cm (32/34 ins), 91/97 (36/38 ), 101/107 (40/42), 111/117 (44/46), 122/127 (48/50).

Actual size, 99 cm (39 ins), 111 (43¾), 123 (48¼), 134 (52¾), 146 (57½).

Length, 57 cm (22½ ins), 59 (23¼), 61 (24), 62 (24½), 63 (24¾).

MATERIALS

4 (4,5,5,5) 100-gram balls of Rico Design Creative Soft Wool Aran in Grey (017). One pair each 4.5 mm (No. 7) and 5 mm (No. 6) knitting needles, cable needle; ring markers and stitch-holders. TENSION

18 sts and 24 rows to 10 cm measured over st-st using 5 mm needles.

ABBREVIATI­ONS

BC – Back Cross: slip 1 st on to the cable needle and hold at the back, K2, then P1 from cable needle;

C5B – cable 5 back: slip the next 3 sts on to a cable needle and hold at the back, K2, then K3 from the cable needle; cont – continue;

FC – Front Cross: slip the next 2 sts on to a cable needle and hold at the front, P1, then K2 from cable needle; inc – increase; K– knit; m1 – make one stitch by picking up the diagonal loop lying before next stitch and knit into the back of it; P– purl; rem – remain; rep – repeat; st(s) – stitches; st-st – stocking-stitch (K1 row, P1 row).

Directions are given for five sizes. Figures in brackets refer to the four larger sizes. Figures in square brackets [ ] refer to all sizes and are worked the number of times stated. When writing to us you must enclose an SAE if you would like a reply.

CABLE PANEL (worked over 11 sts)

1st (right side) row – P2, FC, P1, BC, P2.

2nd row – K3, P2, K1, P2, K3. 3rd row – P3, C5B, P3.

4th row – As 2nd row.

5th row – P2, BC, P1, FC, P2. 6th row – K2, P2, K3, P2, K2. 7th row – P1, BC, P3, FC, P1. 8th row – K1, P2, K5, P2, K1. 9th row – P1, K2, P5, K2, P1. 10th row – As 8th row..

11th row – P1, FC, P3, BC, P1.

12th row – As 6th row.

BACK

With 4.5 mm needles, cast on 94 (102, 114, 126, 134) sts. 1st rib row – K2, ★ P2, K2, rep from ★ to end.

2nd rib row – ★ P2, K2, rep from ★ until 2 sts rem, P2. Rep both rib rows until work measures 5 cm, ending after a 1st rib row.

Change to 5 mm needles.

Inc row – P5 (6,3,6,3),

★ m1, P21 (15, 18, 19, 16), rep from ★ until 5 (6,3,6,3) sts rem, m1, P5(6,3,6,3)– 99 (109, 121, 133, 143) sts.

Work in cable and st-st pattern as follows:

1st (right side) row – K27 (32, 38, 44, 49), [work 1st row of cable panel, K6] twice, work 1st row of cable panel, K27 (32, 38, 44, 49).

2nd row – P27 (32, 38, 44, 49), [work 2nd row of cable panel, P6] twice, work 2nd row of cable panel, P27 (32, 38, 44, 49).

3rd - 12th rows – Rep 1st and 2nd rows six times but working 3rd to 12th rows of panel.

These 12 rows set the pattern. Cont in pattern as set until work measures 35 cm from cast-on edge, ending after a wrong-side row.

Place a ring marker at each end of next row ★★ .

Cont in cable and st-st pattern until work measures 56 (58, 60, 61, 62) cm, ending after a wrong-side row. Shape shoulders – Keeping pattern correct, cast off 8 (9, 11, 12, 14) sts at the beg of the next 6 (4,6,2,6) rows – 51 (73, 55, 109, 59) sts. 2nd size only – Cast off 10 sts at beg of the next 2 rows – 53 sts.

4th size only – Cast off 13 sts at the beg of the next 4 rows – 57 sts.

All sizes – 51 (53, 55, 57, 59) sts. Leave these sts on a stitch-holder.

FRONT

Work as given for back to ★★ . Cont in pattern as set till work measures 48 (50, 52, 53, 54) cm, ending after a wrong row.

Shape left neck – Patt 30 (34, 39, 44, 48) sts, turn and leave rem sts on a stitch-holder.

Working on first set of sts only, dec 1 st at the neck edge on every wrong-side row until 24 (28, 33, 38, 42) sts rem. Continue straight till front measures the same as back to shoulders, ending after a wrong-side row.

Shape shoulders – Keeping pattern correct, cast off 8 (9, 11, 12, 14) sts at the beg of the next and 2 (1,2,0,2) following alternate rows – 0 (10, 0, 26, 0) sts.

2nd size only – Cast off 5 sts at beg of the next 2 rows.

4th size only – Cast off

13 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows.

Shape right neck – With wrong side facing, and beginning at side edge, join yarn and patt the first 30 (34, 39, 44, 48) sts and turn, leaving the central 39 (41, 43, 45, 47) sts on the holder. Complete to match left neck, reversing shaping.

SLEEVES

With 4.5 mm needles, cast on 46 (46, 50, 54, 54) sts. Work in rib as given for back until work measures 4 cm, ending after a 1st rib row. Change to 5 mm needles.

Inc row – P23 (23, 25, 27, 27), m1, purl to end – 47 (47, 51, 55, 55) sts. Work in cable and st-st pattern as follows:

1st row – K18 (18, 20, 22, 22), work 1st row of pattern panel, K18 (18, 20, 22, 22). 2nd row – P18 (18, 20, 22, 22), work 2nd row of pattern panel, P18 (18, 20, 22, 22). These 2 rows set the position of the pattern. Cont in pattern as set and work another 2 rows.

Inc row – K1, m1, patt to last st, m1, K1 – 49 (49, 53, 57, 57) sts.

Cont in pattern as set, working new sts in st-st and inc as before at each end of every following 8th (6th, 6th, 6th, 6th) row till there are 69 (75, 81, 83, 87) sts. Work straight till sleeve measures 46 (46, 47, 48, 48) cm, ending with a wrong-side row.

Cast off 23 (26, 29, 30, 32) sts at the beg of the next 2 rows – 23 sts.

Cast off.

TO COMPLETE Neckband – Join right shoulder seam. With 4.5 mm needles, right side facing and beginning at the front, pick up and knit 16 sts along the left neck, knit 39 (41, 43, 45, 47) sts on the front holder, pick up and knit 16 sts along right neck and knit 51 (53, 55, 57, 59) sts on back holder – 122 (126, 130, 134, 138) sts. Beg with a 2nd rib row, work in rib as given for back until neckband measures 3 cm, ending after a 1st rib row. Cast off in rib pattern.

To Make Up – Join left shoulder and neckband seams. Fold sleeves in half lengthways and place folds to shoulder seams then sew in position between markers. Join side and sleeve seams. Pin out garment to the measuremen­ts given. Cover with clean, damp tea towels and leave to dry. See ball-band for washing and care instructio­ns. n
