RHONA EVANS and her mother, BRONWEN, are cockle pickers in a Welsh coastal village. Rhona’s father, DAVID, can’t work due to ill health, and his moods have lost him friends after the war. Rhona has a beautiful voice and her neighbour, miner BRYN THOMAS, enjoys her singing and is attracted to her. Bronwen has warned Rhona to keep away from the Thomases. The families have been estranged since Bryn’s father, IVOR, the mine foreman, refused to give David his job at the mine back, due to his shattered nerves. Rhona’s friend NEDRA wants to flee to Swansea. She wants Rhona to go, too, to begin a singing career, but Rhona feels tied to the village and her family, especially since Bronwen has recently suffered a serious bout of bronchitis. Rhona feels she’ll never achieve her dreams, which include getting to know handsome Bryn . . .
