The Peterborough Evening Telegraph

Waste of our money again

-

I’M sure that many people support the letter from Lisa Mills from Thorney ( Evening Telegraph, February 28) strongly objecting to the removal of the trees in Bridge Street by Peterborough’s Conservative Council.

Here we see, once again, the total waste of council tax payers’ money, on a project nobody wants.

In the words of Nick Sandford (Liberals): “Peterborough’s Conservative council continues to plough blindly forward with fanciful pet projects, without any proper consultation with the people of Peterborough.”

As Lisa Mills goes on to state: “We had no idea such issues were being discussed, otherwise I (we) would have made our views known at the time” (to save the trees).

Here we have, once again, Peterborough City Council ignoring its citizens, and riding rough shod over everyone.

Also, there must be many people who totally agree with her views – that we already have “one large, boring piece of wasteland, created in Cathedral Square” (costing millions of pounds in delay and disruption).

Now we have council leader Cllr Marco Cereste once again determined to create further havoc on Bridge Street, with the removal of the trees (at further cost to the council tax payer!)

Peterborough City Council lamented in the Evening Telegraph that it needs to make a multi-million pound bid to the Government for money to repair the roads cracked up by weather, when, at the same time, we have a council wasting so much money.

The Government has given Peterborough, and neighbouring counties, £3 billion covering 2011 to 15 to repair weather-cracked roads, with a further £200 million given to them last year for the roads (reported in the Daily Mail). But Peterborough’s Conservative city council just continues to waste our money.

THE social care system is in deep crisis, and this will continue to worsen unless the Government acts now. We need Peterborough’s help to get this message to the country’s decision makers.

Tomorrow, hundreds of older and disabled people and their families will travel to London for a mass lobby of Parliament, and we are urging people from Peterborough to join them and help their MP understand the need for urgent reform of the social care system.

People are living longer with illness and disability, and the chronically underfunded system is in crisis. Yet, social care budgets across England fell by an estimated £1 billion last year, according to the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services.

This is the opportunity of a generation for government to improve the lives of millions of people, and help ease the strain on the already financially stretched NHS.

Social care is not a ‘nice to have’ extra – it is about giving people the support they need to live with dignity. Without this support, many people are condemned to a mere existence.
