Davey puts Wisbech promotion bid back on track with a cool winner

-

RIDGEONS LEAGE Premier Division

WISBECH boss Steve Appleby was smiling again on Saturday as his team kept their promotion hopes alive.

The Fenmen stretched their unbeaten Premier Division run to four matches with a 2-1 triumph at Hadleigh.

They fell behind against the run of play but Chris Bacon hauled them level in first-half stoppage time and fellow frontman Nick Davey coolly converted in a one-on-one situation with a quarter-of-an-hour left to complete the turnaround.

It was another welcome result ahead of a key spell of three home games in the next eight days.

Appleby said: “It was a good result and we produced a good performance to get it. The lads were up for it and got what they deserved.

“It’s a crucial time for us. We have to keep winning matches to try and close in on the top two and we have to make the most of these home games.”

Division One

WHILE Wisbech’s sights are set on promotion, Fenland neighbours Marchtown are looking over their shoulders.

Brett Whaley’s men suffered a third successive defeat when losing 2-1 at Debenham LC on Saturday despite a Luke Pepper goal.

It’s a slump in form that has almost certainly ended their hopes of promotion. Boss Whaley said: “We actually played pretty well and were unlucky to lose, but that sort of thing happens when you are stuck in a bad run.

“It’s been a good season so far and we don’t want to see ourselves sliding down the table. If we perform like this in our remaining games, we’ll certainly do better than we have done recently.”

March have agreed a deal to borrow King’s Lynn striker Liam Harrold whenever he is not required by the UCL Premier Division title-chasers.

EVO-STIIK LEAGE Division One South

GOALKEEPER Ross Whalin made a series of fine saves as Stamford fought out a goalless draw at Romulus in Division One South of the Evo-stik League.
