A POLICE pursuit through Peterborough ended up with a car driving the wrong way along a busy dual carriageway and smashing into a van.

A black Citroen Saxo was driven along the southbound carriageway of the A15 Bourges Boulevard in the wrong direction yesterday morning, before crashing into a Ford Transit van near to the junction with the A47 Soke Parkway.

It followed a pursuit by police just minutes earlier which ended when the car went down a no-entry road at the Triangle, in Lincoln Road.

Miraculously, nobody was seriously injured in the collision, though 29-year-old Adam Golding, who was driving the van belonging to his employers Lincolnshire Pet Crematorium, said he was startled to see the car coming towards him.

He said: “It’s a bit shocking really. I had just come off the roundabout so I must have been going about 30mph when I saw this car coming towards me.

“The driver saw me and started to brake, but because it was greasy and wet the back end of the car went out and it spun into the van.

“Not much damage has been done to the van’s bodywork but it’s a bit of a mess underneath to the steering column.

“I haven’t been seriously injured but I’ve had a few back problems recently and it felt a bit stiff after the crash, so I’ll go and get it checked out.”

Cambridgeshire Police said that the incident began to unfold at about 10.53am, when the Saxo was allegedly flagged up on the Police National Computer.

The officers then pursued the car along Lincoln Road, when it went through the no-entry road at the Triangle.

The police then stopped their pursuit due to the danger of following the car.

The collision on Bourges Boulevard caused huge tailbacks stretching back as far as Werrington, with the road partially blocked while the vehicles were recovered and accident investigation teams carried out their examinations.

A 23-year-old man was arrested at the scene in connection with the collision on suspicion of failing to stop for police, dangerous driving and driving while disqualified.

Another man is believed to have fled the scene and is being sought by police for questioning.

Anyone with information about this man should contact Cambridgeshire police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
