THE Battle of the Aisne is seen as a turning point in the First World War and the start of trench warfare.
The 1st Northamptonshire Regiment pursued the Germans to the battleground bringing about a stalemate in the war.
Neither side could move against the other nor would they accept defeat.
Both Germans and the allies dug in which was the start of the four-year long slog.
The trenches stretched from Switzerland to the coast in northern France and Belgium.
