WHEN is the short-term car parking at the railway station going to be addressed, and will it be better after the redevelopment?

At present, it is an utter disgrace for a major main line station.

Prior to the start of the building work it was bad enough, but now it is not fit for purpose.

If you have to drop off or meet a train at a popular time, there is just nowhere to stop without obstructing traffic.

The old short stay car park (with its ridiculously narrow spaces) is now mostly given over to (under-utilised) disabled parking, meaning that there are probably fewer than a dozen spaces for everyone else who needs to stop for a few minutes.

On top of that, there is barely adequate provision for taxis, and frequently there is an unattended taxi or private hire car occupying one of the only two drop-off spaces.

I have not seen in the redevelopment plans how it will be improved.

My preference would be to knock down the Great Northern Hotel and use the space for the benefit of station users!

One further thing – the £1 charge (assuming you can get a space) is extortionate for what is often a five-minute stop.

At other stations I have been to you can get a free 15 minute ticket, or you can pay if you know you want to be longer – either way you have to display a valid ticket.

This all needs to be fixed – soon!
