Golden boy Knight a shin­ing light for COPS

CITY of Peter­bor­ough Swim­ming Club (COPS) star Liam Knight warmed up for the Euro­pean Ju­nior Cham­pi­onships later this month with a dom­i­nant dis­play at the Bri­tish Gas East Re­gion Youth Cham­pi­onships at the Basildon Sports Vil­lage.

The tal­ented 17 year-old won four gold medals and two sil­vers to emerge as top COPS swim­mer and help his club to a cred­itable third place over­all be­hind Hat­field and Ip­swich.

The top girl from COPS was Zara Bai­ley, who won two gold medals, three sil­vers and a bronze in the 15/16 Year age group.

Other in­di­vid­ual medal win­ners were El­iz­a­beth Win­ter (three sil­vers), Jo Long­lands (bronze and sil­ver) and Matthew Brigham (bronze).

COPS also did well in the re­lay events. There were sil­ver medals for the girls 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle teams and the boys 4x200m freestyle and med­ley squads.

Rep­re­sent­ing COPS in the re­lays were Liam Knight, Matthew Brigham, Kyle Ainge, Sa­muel Holmes, Joshua Aylett, Ben Rip­pon, An­thony Coombes, Nathan Tweedie, Zara Bai­ley, El­iz­a­beth Win­ter, Jo Long­lands, Molly Nor­man, Amelia But­ler, Kerry Hunt, Char­lotte Har­ri­son and Heather Pfeif­fer.

Over the next few weeks there are a num­ber of com­pe­ti­tions and at the end of May, the COPS ju­nior squads will be head­ing for Nor­wich to com­pete in the East Re­gion Age Group com­pe­ti­tion.

TOP COP: Liam Knight won four gold medals.

HEAD GIRL: Zara Bai­ley won two gold medals.
