Roberts’ side are the first play-off winners

-

KINGS Cliffe Reserves are gearing up to sail into unchartered waters next season.

The village lads clinched promotion by becoming the first winners in the new Peterborough League promotion play-offs.

Kevin Roberts’ side saw off Coates Reserves 3-2 in the Division Four final at the league’s Riverside Pavilion headquarters on Saturday.

Their reward is a rise in class to Division Three competition for the

mark.plummer@jpress.co.uk first time in their history.

Manager Roberts said: “Winning promotion was a nice surprise at the end of the season.

“The boys have really pulled together and we’re looking forward to the challenge that next season will provide.”

Joe Ellis and Kevin Brisley handed Cliffe the edge on Saturday but player-boss Dave Moore tucked away a penalty just before the break to give Coates plenty of hope.

The teams traded goals inside a minute during the second half with a second goal from Brisley quickly being followed by another from Moore.

Former Premier Division player Brisley was then denied a hat-trick by a goal-line clearance.
