Drink driver fell asleep after crash

-

A DRINK driver who was caught asleep at the wheel of his car has been banned from driving.

James Barnett (24) of Broadgate, Spalding, was found slumped in his Subaru Impreza at 2.30am at a property in Crowland Road, Eye on May 5 this year.

Yesterday he appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court, where he pleaded guilty to drink driving.

The court heard he crashed into a farm gate, before trying to do a Uturn on someone’s lawn, before falling asleep.

When he was arrested he gave a reading of 74mg of alcohol in 100ml of breath – more than twice the legal limit of 35mg in 100ml.

Sentencing, Deputy District Judge Sandeep Kainth said: “The fact you collided with a fence, tried to do a U-turn before falling asleep clearly shows you were fully impaired, and I suspect it is sheer luck that there was no injury to anyone else.

“You have shown remorse, and you do appear to be a very bright young man. It is safe to conclude it is unlikely you will appear before the court again.”

Barnett was fined £400, ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge, as well as being banned for 18 months.
