Independent retail campaign takes to High Street
THE Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) is set to give its local support for Independent Retailer Month 2012 in July.
The promotion is a global “shop local” initiative, which complements the FSB’S own Keep Trade Local campaign.
Amir Butt, Peterborough branchvice-chairman, FSB, said: “Small independent retailers are vital to our economy and it is imperative that we recognise their importance to our high streets and to putting economic recovery on a firmer footing.
“These small firms aren’t just part of the local economy – they are the local economy.
“By dedicating a whole month to championing the High Street, we hope that more people will spend locally and really benefit the communities they live in,” added Mr Butt.
The organisers of Independent Retailer Month have set its objectives to:
Encourage consumers to shop locally.
Encourage independent retailers to create a buzz in July.
Encourage suppliers and all those who serve the independent retail sector to spread the word.
Retail expert Mary Portas was appointed by the Government in 2011 to conduct an independent review into the future of the High Street, and the Independent Retailers Month will certainly help to raise its profile.
The FSB has been campaigning to Keep Trade Local and presented a petition to the Prime Minister, which was signed by many thousands of people from across the UK.
