Cllr John Holdich, above, said there were a num­ber of op­tions to tackle ab­sen­teeism. He said: “The first ac­tion is for the school to write let­ters, make phone calls and in­ter­view par­ents. “If the at­ten­dance is be­low 85 per cent then the author­ity can in­ter­vene, and talk to par­ents about their le­gal and parental re­spon­si­bil­i­ties. “Unau­tho­rised ab­sences can re­sult in a fine of £ 60. “The author­ity car­ries out sweeps of ar­eas to catch chil­dren tru­ant­ing.”
