Some of the fastest cyclists in the country will inspire residents to get on their bikes when they race round Peterborough streets as the Tour Series returns to the city. The popular cycle race will return to the city centre on May 20 after a year away, with large crowds expected to watch and cheer on the competitors.

This year a special workplace challenge will take place on the same course, with businesses encouraged to sign up to take part.

Simon Fairhall, from Living Sport, said: “We are looking for teams of three to be taking part in a relay, using three wheeled cycles.

“There is a lot of things going on to encourage children to get involved in sport, but not much to get adults involved. There are lots of benefits to it, and I would encourage people to sign up and get involved.”

Peter Hodges, f rom the Pearl Izumi Tour Series, said he hoped youngsters would be inspired to take up the sport after watching the event.

He said: “The Peterborough round has always been one of the most popular, and now there are lots of restaurants for families to make a real event of it.

“I think it should get people inspired. You never know, the next Bradley Wiggins could be watching in Peterborough this year.”

Cyclists taking part in the Tour Series race welcomed a return to Peterborough.

Eye-based Steve Lampier, from the Velosure Giordana team, said: “It is fantastic to be back. It is always great racing in my home race. There are always big crowds here, so I am looking forward to the race.”

The course will see riders racing through Bridge Street, along Bourges Boulevard and through Cathedral Square.

The Tour Series includes a men’s and a women’s race, with Cambridge rider Laura Massey lining up for the Epic Cycles - Scott Contessa team.

She said: “It is my local race so I am glad it is back.

“I t i s one of t he f a s t e s t courses we visit, and is not particularly technical, so it is enjoyable to race on.”
