Steels and Steadman are on top of the world again
Local ultra-distance athletes Claire Steels and Lauren Steadman both had that ontop-of-the-world feeling again at the weekend. Steels was a winner at the World Duathlon ChampionshipsinSpainwhileSteadman stormed to victory at the ITU WorldParatriathlonatStrathclyde Park.
Steels, a 30 year-old per- sonal trainer from Bourne, won the 30-34 female age group in Aviles by almost two minutes.
She completed the 10k run, 20k cycle ride and 5k run in 2:19:06withsecond-placed Beatriz Tenreiro Alvarez from Spain clocking 2:20:53.
Steels tweeted afterwards: “Well that was harder than I thought it was going to be. It was the hottest race ever.”
It wasSteels’ second world title win. In October she won the World Sprint Duathlon Championships in Adelaide just over a year after taking up the sport.
She also won a a silver medalin the European Sprint Championships in Germany in April.

She won another gold medal for Great Britain at the Glasgow2014Commonwealth Gamesvenuejustaweekafter winning the European Championship title in Portugal.
Steadman has already met the qualification criteria for theRioParalympicGamesand put on a dominant performance in the PT4 event to finishaheadofteam-matesKerry Large and Ruth Wilson, who were racing in only their second ever international events having come through British Triathlon’s talent ID system.
Steadman completed the 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run in 1:09:55 with runner-upLargeclocking 1:16:28.
