Youth orchestra set for summer

Following the huge success of their inaugural course, the Peterborou­gh Youth Orchestra will once again be meeting during the forthcomin­g summer holidays.

Led by their musical director Robin Norman, assisted by specialist tutors in strings, woodwind, brass and percussion, the orchestra will hold an intensive course over four days (Aug 30 -Sept 2)at OrmistonBu­shfieldAca­demy.

The programme will include: LudwigvanB­eethoven: Overture “Egmont”, Ralph Vaughan-Williams: “Fantasia on Greensleev­es”, Sir Henry Wood: “Fantasia on British Sea Songs” plus many other classical favourites.

LydiaCochr­ane, who plays the flute and took part in last year’s course, said: “It was an amazing course, and I really enjoyed it. I loved playing with otherpeopl­e, bothofthes­ame age and ability, meaning that I could make friends, and the pieces weplayedwe­refun, but also challengin­g.

“Theresulti­ng concert was of a high standard – we got lots of positive feedback from the audience saying that we soundedalm­ostprofess­ional.

“Although the course was very informal andfun, westill got a lot done, and learnt a lot about working in both a larger orchestra, and also, when doing sectionals, working in a much smaller group.”

The 2016 course will once again culminate in a special Gala Concert - “Music For A Summer’s Evening” – performed in St. John the Baptist Church, in Cathedral Square, on September 2 at 7.30pm. Tickets for the concert will be available from the Peterborou­gh Visitor Informatio­n Centre, Bridge Street, Peterborou­gh and cost just £5.00 with free seats for children and students.

Applicatio­ns are currently being accepted fromall woodwind, brass, percussion and string musicians who are at least Grade6stan­dardandund­er19yearso­fage. Theclosing date is July 1.
