Whincup can land himself a whopping £60,000 prize

City rod John Whincup has landed himself a place in a grand final that offers a whopping first prize of £60,000. WhincupwasawinneratLarford Lakes in Worcestershire in the MaverMegaMatchThis Qualifier.
Fishingagainstsomeofthe best anglers in thecountry, he caught on the long pole with pellet thencameintothemargins late in the matchtofinish with 157lb.
The win puts him into the grand final, which this year takes place on Saturday September 3 at the Hayfield Fishery in Doncaster. Our local commercial waters produced some very good weights at the weekend, none better perhaps than a huge 216lb 3oz taken by Lee Kendal in the JVAC match on the Oak Pool at Decoy Lakes.
Drawn on peg 13 Kendal caught right from the off fishing shallow with caster. A late switch to cat meat in the margins saw some very big fish taken to boost his net of fish past the 200lb mark.
Yet, it certainly wasn’t all plain sailing for Kendal as pushing him all the way on peg 11 was Chris Saunders. The Huntingdon rod fished cat meat on a short pole line to finish on 191lb 5oz.
Third place went to Roger Gowler on 186lb 14oz. It was not quite as good in the Over 55s Friday match fished on the Beastie Lake, but there still some good returns recorded.
Topping the field with 119lb 3oz from peg seven was Ray Torrington. The Deeping St James angler caught all his fish close in on cat meat.
Dave Rowell put a level 117lb to the scales catching on the pole with pellet and later red maggot to take the runner-up spot, then came Roy Whincup on a maggot feeder weighing in 101lb 10oz. The last match in a series of four run on Ferry Meadows saw both lakes a little below their usual good form.
But once again there was a big turnout on what is now onceagainoneofthecountry’s top bream waters.
Outinfrontfrompeg51was Maurice Williams. He caught breamandafewskimmerson the feeder for 64lb 9oz.
Runner-up was Nigel Truman, whocaughtonthefeeder weighing in 40lb 10oz. Thenit was Chris Hill with 37lb 14oz. Float Fish Farm Fishery continues to improve which is attracting more anglers.
I n t he Saturday Open match fished on the Wagtail Pool it was Alan Marshall topping the field. He weighed in 115lb on the feeder and pole from peg 22.
Second with 110lb was Vince Hull, who caught close in with pellet and corn. Mark Barron was third with 100lb. HorseshoeLakehasbeenalittle below par of late but most oftheHotpointACanglershad a reasonable day’s sport in the club’s latest match.
Top rod and the man in form was Paul Faulkner. He drew peg eight and caught on a small feeder then pole and paste in the last hour to weigh in 136lb 3oz.
I had a busy day fishing a small pellet feeder on peg two catching lots of small F1s to take second place on 99lb 1oz just ahead of Tyrone Horn with 83lb 5oz.
