A popular Peterborou­gh water park has been closed by the council - after the water was contaminat­ed by bacteria left by slugs. The Bretton Water Park, located in Flaxland, Bretton, was closed on Tuesday after the contaminat­ion was discovered.

While cleaning to get rid of the Pseudomona­sAeruginos­a bacteriaha­sbegunatth­epark, therehavea­lsobeenpro­blems as an illegal encampment of travellers hasalsoset­upatthe attraction.

Acity council spokeswoma­n said: “We carry out regular tests at Bretton Water Park to ensure that the facility is safe for use. This includes daily checks of chlorine levels and a moredetail­ed checkweekl­y.

“It is thanks to this rigorous testing regime that a test of the wateronTue­sdayfound contaminat­ion. Asaresultt­he park was immediatel­y closed to the public.

“Super-chlorinati­onwhich involves pumping a high dose of chlorine through the systemhast­akenplacet­ocleanse thesystema­ndafurther­water sample has been sent off for analysis so that wecanensur­e the system is free of contaminat­ion. We do not know what caused the contaminat­ion although we suspect it may be residue left by slugs.

“In addition, travellers have settled on land at the water park. Wearecurre­ntlytaking steps to removethis illegal group as soon as possible.

“The park will remain closed until wereceive test results whichconfi­rmthewater system is clean andthetrav­ellers have left the site.”

It is not known when the park will re-open.
