Construction of a new super surgery in Peterborough has been given the green light. The medical centre will take over services currently run in Dogsthorpe, Welland, Parnwell, as well as Burghley Road SurgeryandChurchWalkSurgery, close to Lincoln Road.
Patients will have access to six consulting rooms, three minor operation/treatment rooms, a health care assistant/treatment room and a pharmacy.
The healthcare centre will be situated at the John Mans- field Centre in Western Avenue, Dogsthorpe, where the now demolished John Mansfield School used to be based.
Approvalforthecentrewas unanimously given by members of the Peterborough City Council planning committee.
Councillor Peter Hiller, a committee member, said he knew the site well and that it had been “laying fallow.”
He added: “A medical centre of this calibre is welcome. As far as I’m concerned I wouldbecompletelysupportive of this scheme.”
Thepositivedecisioncame after residents at neighbouring Acacia Avenue removed their objections to the plans.
A petition of 44 signatures had been signed by the resi- dents due to the influx of traffic which would come from people bypassing the traffic calming measures in Welland Road.
However, oppositiontothe development disappeared after it was agreed to close off the route from Acacia Avenue to the site.
The medical centre will also include 31 parking spaces for patients and Cllr Bella Saltmarsh, member for Dogsthorpe, said: “This site has beenleftderelict for too long.”
NHS England said it needs toagreethefinalbusinesscase from the Welland Medical Practicebeforeitcanprogress with the development.
It will then set a completion date.
