An ‘oarsome’ amount raised

Peterborou­gh Dad, Barry McCann has raised more than £1,700 for charity in memory of his daughter. Barry, 48, from Netherton completed an epic 17km rowing challenge at Peterborou­gh City Rowing LakeonWedn­esday, lastweek to help raise funds for Sands the stillbirth and neonatal death charity.

Barry’sdaughter, Angelina was stillborn on February 14, 2011 and the support of the stillbirth charity helped him and his wife, Sally feel brave enough to try again.

On June 15, Barry rowed a length of the lake for every child that died on the same day as his daughter, laying a flower at the end of each length.

Fr i e n d s a n d family gathered round the lake to cheer him on, including his daughter, Martha, aged four.

Barry said: “I have been overwhelme­d by the generosity of those who have supported this challenge, especially Peterborou­gh City RowingClub­whoallowed­me to use the club for the event andRuairiM­oore, whorowed alongside me and kept me going.

“I feel incredibly humbled by all the help and want to thank everyone who has supported me in completing this challenge. I feel a great senseofrel­iefandsati­sfaction that, together, wehaverais­ed so much to help others.”

B a r r y ’s w i f e , S a l l y volunteers for Peterborou­gh and Stamford Sands, alongside fellow volunteer EmilyParso­ns, theysaid: “We rely on raising funds locally in order to be able to support bereaved parents and the funds raised by Barry’s row will go a long way.”
