City’s vigil for MP Jo Cox

Speeches and a book of condolence pay tribute to Jo Cox

A respectful vigil was held outside the Town Hall last Friday in memory of the Labour MP Jo Cox. Politician­s and members of the public gathered at 4.30pm in Bridge-Street for the service where a speech was read out by Councillor Richard Ferris, Labour member for Park Ward on Peterborou­gh City Council.

Cllr Ferris said: “We are united in shock and grief at what happened on the streets of Birstall.

“For once, let’s please see the best of a united Britain, united in compassion and a determinat­ion to pull together to build a more just, tolerant and supportive society. We must do all that we can to refocus on our humanity, foster and celebrate idealism, and protect our democracy.”

Peterborou­gh MP Stewart Jackson also spoke at the vigil, and MP for North West Cambridges­hire Shailesh Vara has also paid his respects.

He said: “My deepest sympathies go to Jo’s family and friends. Jo’s loss deprives her constituen­ts and the country of a formidable and talented MP.

Mrs Cox was shot and stabbed in Birs tall, West Yorkshire last Thursday.

The vigil forthe MP was the second to take place in Peterborou­gh last week.

On Tuesday evening, a vigil was held at the Holocaust Memorial, St John the Baptist church, Cathedral Square, in solidarity with the people who lost their lives in the recent Orlando shootings.

The vigil was hosted by the Peterborou­gh LGBT Equality Council.
