The fight for Posh first-team places starts on Saturday. Posh are at Boston United (3pm) for their first summer friendly and new manager Grant McCann has emphasised the need for his players to hit the ground running.

Posh have 1 0 summer friendlies arranged against opponents ranging f rom Championsh­ip standard to club legend Ken Charlery’s Ware Town, who play in the EvoStikSou­thernLeagu­ePremier Division.

McCann, who was pleased with the fitness levels and form of his players in their pre-season training camp in Portugal last week, said: “The pre-seasongame­sareveryim­portant.

“Trainingis important, but some players enjoy training and others don’t. I take much more notice of how players perform in matches so if they want to start the first game of the League One season they need to show me some form in the next month or so.

“I’m very pleased with the make-up of the squad and I’ was very happy with the form the lads showed in Portugal.

“It was very hot so very tough, but we looked fit and strong.

“Apart from the left-back position we have competitio­n for every place in the starting XI. We have two good players battling for every position which is just how I like it.
