ROAD SAFETY CALLS AFTER BOY (3) BADLY HURT
A councillor has called for safety measures to be installed on a city road after a three year old boy was seriously injured in a collision. The boy was walking along Gunthorpe Ridings on Thursday morning when he was involvedinthecollision withthe car.
The crash happened at about 8.45am, and the road had to be closed for several hourswhile police carried out investigations.
GunthorpecouncillorDarren Fower said he was hoping to raise the issue at the next council meeting.
Hesaid:“Wedidaresidents survey down there, and there was a lot of talk about speeding.
“We don’t know the circumstances of this accident, but there are no crossings, speed humps or speed activated signs down there.
“I’d like to see a crossing down there.
“We don’t want to see any more accidents.
“It is a road that is used a lot - I think there are 11 cul-desacs leading off it, and there are youngfamilies andelderly citizens living down there.”
“If we want to encourage peopletobepedestriansorcyclists, we have to look at road safety.”
An East of England Ambulance Service Trust spokesmansaidtheboyhadsuffered ‘potentially serious head and back injuries.’
TheboywastakentoPeterborough City Hospital for further treatment.
Dave Radwell, who lives a fewyardsawayfromwherethe accident happened, said: “It is a shock. The rapid response vehicle was here within four minutes, and the ambulance a couple of minutes later. The boy was put into the ambulance and taken away straight away.”
Another driver who saw the i ncident said he had stopped to call the emergency services.
He said: “As I turned into Gunthorpe Ridings I saw a commotion. I stopped the car and put my hazard lights on.
“Awoman, whoIthink was the mother, was screaming.”
A police spokesman said the boy’s condition had not changed since the incident.
