Plans are afoot to form a new city-based American Football team.. . exclusively for female players.
Women aged 17 and over are being invited to join the PeterboroughRoyals, whoaim to offerjunior, youth andnoncontact teamswithin the next three years.
One of the driving forces behind the idea is Mark Kerr, who also founded and ran the successful Peterborough Saxons men’s team from 2004 to 2011 and who played for their precurser, the East Midland Saxons, since 2002.
The Royals though will be an entirely new, independent organisation.
Kerr said: “American Football is a unique way to get active with positions to suit all shapes, sizes and fitness levels, it is more accessible than many other sports.”
The number of women’s teams has grown by 80 per cent in the past year.
TheGreatBritain team, established in 2012andcurrently ranked second in Europe, offers an attainable goal for anyone aspiring to compete at an elite level.
Kerr is being joined in the project byagroupwithover30 yearsexperienceandaproven track record in launching and developing successful clubs.
They are looking to talk to anyone interested in getting involved, on or off the field.
“Playing American Football is great fun,” said a club spokesperson, “but it takes a committedteamofpeoplebehindthe scenes to get us there in the first place.”
