Johanna Konta
Winning a first big tournament was a great effort by the big-hitting Brit/Hungarian/Australian. Beating a Williams sister in the final of a home tournament for the American was most impressive. Konta is a proper talent, one with the power game to trouble the best, unlike real Brits Heather Watson and Laura Robson. I heard someone ask why Chris Froome ‘doesn’t get the recognition he deserves?’ after he’d won his third Tour de France. That’s an easy one to answer. Professional cycling has a long history of cheating so people like me don’t necessarily believe what they are seeing. It’s a shame for the likes of Froome (above) who has never doped, but don’t blame the general public for their apathy, blame Lance Armstrong. Anyway cycling is too weird, Froome crashed twice without punishment. How come such carelessness goes unpunished? The International Olympic Committee has missed a golden opportunity to prove they give a damn about their legacy and their history. A blanket ban of all Russains from the Rio Games should have been a slam dunk of a decision, but instead the IOC at best fudged it, or at worst, bottled it. But I don’t understand why all Russians with a history of doping are banned and yet American sprinters who have cheated in the past, like Justin Gatlin (above) and Tyson Gay, are allowed to take part. Double standards surely?
