Cricket - Five wickets in five balls for Ketton star
A sensational spell of swing bowling from Shakir Mahmood propelled Ketton closer to promotion to Rutland Division One. MahmooddismissedfiveNewboroughbatsmeninfiveballs, three at the end of one over and two more with the first twoballs of the following over.
It’s a rare achievement for theall-rounder. It’s neverhappened in first-class cricket.
Mahmoood’s spell caused Newborough to collapse from 74-2 to 81 all out and set Kettonupfora10-wicketwin, aresult that catapulted them 84 points clear in Division Two!
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” claimed Ketton skipper RobVitas. “Strangely Shakir hadn’t been getting many wickets this season.”
Four Newborough men were out for ‘golden ducks.’ Mahmood f i nished with fugures of 7-33.
It was an excellent weekend all round for Ketton who hadscoredashock70-runwin at Saffron Walden in Cambs Division One24hoursearlier.
Mahmood(54& 2-34) again played well as did Peter Rowe who took three wickets and ran two opponents out, one with a direct hit from the boundary line.
Kettonhaveanothertricky Cambs League match on Saturday when travelling to Godmanchester.
Ramsey should be able to bounce back from their topof-the-table defeat to Foxton by winning at lowly Burwell seconds this weekend.
Ramsey failed by 33 runs to overhaul Foxton’s 238-7 to fall into third place, one spot behind Wisbech who beat Godmanchester by 60 runs torecordafourthstraightwin.
In Division Two March and Newborough fought out a thrilling tie at Burrowmoor Road.
Vamshi Parvathaneni (51) and Matt Cawley (49) added 104 for the eighth wicket for Newborough who closed on 185-8. March required three to win with three wickets left, butDaveStrattonstrucktwice late on to force the tie.
It wasn’t a completely disastrous day for second-placed March as leaders St Ives were beaten by 13 runs at Ufford Park for whom Tanvir Hussain scored 87 out of 158.
