Cummings and goings at the ABAX Stadium

Posh made a £1 milion bid for a player as part of new manager Grant McCann’s attempts to complete a rapid re-building job at the ABAX Stadium.

Hibs’ outstanding young striker Jason Cummings was the subject of the seven-figure offer. It was rebuffed by the Scottish Championship side, but the big bid was a serious statement of intent by Posh.

McCann has started a cull of his predecessor Graham Westley’s more optimistic signings by letting forward Aaron Williams and mid field- er Jordan Nicholson leave on loan for National North side Nuneaton.

The pair only moved to Posh from non-league football in January. Williams came from Nuneaton.

Striker Joe Gormley is another striker set to leave Posh on loan. Scottish clubs are believed to be interested in a player who has not featured in the first two Posh matchday squads of this season.

Posh have been operating with just three forwards, Paul Taylor, Shaquile Coulthirst and Tom Nichols in a squad of 18 so a further potential goalscorer is required.

McCann wouldn’t comment on Cummings in particular, or on other possible targets.

“I leave the transfers to other people ,” McCann stated.

“If people arrive before the end of August then good, but we will have to wait and see.”

The bid, and the fee involved (it could have risen to £1.7 million) for Cummings was leaked to Scottish media outlets late last week and confirmed by Hibs boss Neil Lennon.

Lennon, speaking after Cummings scored twice in a first day of the season win for Hibs, said: “Peterborough made a very fair offer for the player. It’s not as though they were offering just £200,000.

“But there are not many clubs who can match our valuation of Jason so the bid was rejected.”

Cummings admitted he was flattered by the Posh interest, but had no intention of leaving Scottish football right now.

Williams scored on his second debut for Nuneaton, but his side went down 3-2 at home to Halifax.

All loans, as well as permanent transfers, have to be completed before the transfer deadline of August 31.
