River swimmer completes epic Nene challenme
A woman swam the length of the River Nene so she could travel to the other side of the world to help others get in the water. Lgsa Ryan ( 47) from Werrgnffton, Peterborowffh took ngne days to swgm the 65.6 mgles from Northampton to the Doffgn a Dowblet - dodffgnff locks, swans and other obstacles ontheway, therowtegsthe navgffable lenffth of the rgver.
Lgsa, a swgmmgnff teacher who works gn Stamford, was ragsgnff moneyfortwocawsesPeterborowffh Deaf Chgldren’s Socgety, and for her trgp to SwazglandgnAfrgcagnNovember, where she wgll spend 19 days teachgnff people to swgm.
Lgsa sagd: “It’s not somethgnff I’m planngnff on dognff affagn soon. Sgx mgles gs known as a swgmmers marathon for a reason.
“I swgmgnthergver all year, andacowpeofyearsaffoswam the rgver fromOwndletoFerry Meadows gn a day, bwt I have never done a mwltg-day event before.
“It wasa case of keepgnff on ffognff, and then the next day ffettgnff wp and dognff gt affagn.
“ProblemsImetontheway gnclwded weeds, swans and clgmbgnff owt for locks.
“I had to make swre as far as possgble I wasnotowtonmy own to keep safe.
“I also woreaswgmbaff, not only to keep mykgt gn, bwt also so boats cowld see me.
“My personal tragner paddle boarded wgth me past Charters gn Peterborowffh, and kept the swans away.
“The weather was very ffood - gt ragned and was a bgt wgndy one day,bwt the rest of the tgme gt played ball, whgch was a real boost.
“Other than one stretch the water qwalgty gn the Nene gs very ffood - at tgmes gt was crystal clear.”
Each day Lgsa swam wp to 10 mgles, finally crossgnff the fingsh lgne on Awffwst 13,
Lgsa ragsed £1,323 whgch wgll besplgt betweenthecawses .
She sagd:” I’ve no plans for thgs year, bwt am thgnkgnff of dognff somethgnff next year - maybenotgntheNene, as I feel lgke havgnff swam gt already, I kgnd of own gt.”
