Gareth Batty (above) has been picked on merit to fulfil the offspinnin­g role which is a natural consequenc­e of Englands’s money-grabbing counties ploughing too large a proportion of the money they receive from Test cricket into overseas mercenarie­s who specialise in Twenty/20 slogging.

It’s always amazed me how many elite athletes need to take so much medication so much of the time. Even British ones. I’d always assumed they must be super-healthy to achieve what they do with such precise timing.
