Get ready for Black His­tory Month

Black His­tory Month cel­e­bra­tions in Pe­ter­bor­ough be­gin at the week­end.

The first event takes place in Cathe­dral Square on Saturday be­tween 11am and 6pm. Therewill be­live music, po­etry read­ings, African cloth­ing, food stalls and arts and crafts.

The theme for 2016 is ‘Africa, Mother of Mankind’ with a cel­e­bra­tion of her­itage and cul­ture.

The other events are: Saturday, Oc­to­ber 8 at the Mil­len­nium Cen­tre, Dick­ens Street, 2pm un­til late. There will be games of domi­noes, sto­ry­telling, tra­di­tional AfroCaribbean food, music and stalls.

• Saturday, Oc­to­ber 22 at the Do­min­ion Chris­tian Con­nec­tions, Park Road, 2pm to 6pm. There will be a fash­ion show from up­com­ing designer Seraphic Cou­ture, music and food from dif­fer­ent parts of Africa.

• Wednesday, Novem­ber 9 at the Cavell Cen­tre, Pe­ter­bor­ough City Hos­pi­tal, 1pm to 3pm. The event will in­clude a fash­ion show, po­etry and food stalls.

Ber­nadetta Omondi, from the Black His­tory Month Com­mit­tee, said: “We be­lieve in com­mu­nity co­he­sion, in­te­gra­tion and tol­er­ance. Our theme this year will high­light that we are all ‘one’ re­gard­less of our dif­fer­ences.”
