City edge a thriller and then receive a cracking cup draw
Hockey - Trebles all round for leading ladies
City of Peterborough have received a cracking draw in the second round of the English Hockey Cup. Last season City enjoyed a club record run to the semifinalsofthecountry’spremier knockout competition.
But they’ll behard pressed to repeat than run as they’ve been paired with National PremierDivisionsideReading in a tie to be played at Bretton Gate on Sunday, October 30.
Reading have won the cup fivetimes, but not since 2004.
City play two divisions below Reading and they’ve made a decent start to their East Premier A Division season with two wins from three matches.
City won 4-3 at Harleston last weekendwithJoeFinding (2), Ross Ambler and impressive youngster Manish Patel on target.
It wasacracking gameand City had to withstand some heavy pressure at times before storming into a 4-1 lead and surviving a hectic finale which saw Finding and Sam Blunt despatched to the sin bin.
They should extend that fine start with victory at bottom club Chelmsford on Saturday.
City skipper Ross Booth said: “Our matches must be great to watch for the neutrals, but our fans won’t have any fingernails left.
“The game at Harleston epitomised our great team spirit. Everyone pulled their weight and we deserved to win. Not many teams manage to win at Harleston.
“Chelmsford lost several players in the summer and have endured a difficult start, but they are always tough to beat at home.”
Remarkably City are only seventh despite six points in the bank. They welcome Aussie forward Robbie Muir back to the club this weekend, although he is carrying an injury.

City beat Lincoln 3-0 at Bretton Gate and host Har- leston seconds this Saturday (1pm). City are third, one of three teams with a 100 per cent record.
Spalding men preserved their 100 per cent record in the Premier B Division with a hard fought 4-3 win at Blueharts. Shaun Cunnington claimed all four goals.
City of Peterborough seconds are not far adrift in third after despatching Havering 5-3. Paul Hillsdon bagged a hat-trick.
