Jagwar Ma-rvelous

-

Australian band Jagwar Ma came out of nowhere to grab deserved plaudits – including praise from Noel Gallagher for their excellent 2013 debut album Howlin’.

It was an ecstatic mix of dub-pop and dancey psychedelia that rightly catapulted them to the forefront of new indie music.

After three years of relentless touring, the trio of Jona Ma,Gabriel Winterfield and Jack Freeman return with the follow-up Every Now & Then.

It began life with the writing in Sydney before the duo headed off to to record it in their new studio in rural France before completing it in London, where old friend Stella Mozgawa from Warpaint helped out with some drumming.

Tracks including new single O B 1 and Give Me A Reason set a feel-good template that recalls Screamadelic era Primal Scream and even have a flavour of prime time Happy Mondays.

At times they feel a little too laidback for their own good but when they hit the sweet spot it stays hit.

Jangly guitars, baggy beats and sun-splashed melodies make for a lush and enveloping listen.

The band are big Brian Wilson fans and they are always looking to get some sunshine in their grooves.

It’s not perfect and there are times when they wonder off up a musical blind alley, but at least they are looking for new places to go.

This is probably not their ‘classic’ but they are definitely heading in the right direction. To be in with a chance of winning this album answer this question. Who had a huge hit with the song Ma Baker? Entries to Jagwar, Nigel Thornton, Peterborough Telegraph, Unex House - Suite B, Bourges Boulevard, Peterborough, PE1 1NG by November 9.
