Football thugs who threw bottles across a busy road while the match was still being played have been jailed. During the second half of the game between Peterborou­gh United and Millwall on October 3 last year, a number of fans clashed on Oundle Road.

Beer bottles were thrown outside the Cherry Tree Pub,

Seven hooligans - six Millwall fans and one from Peterborou­gh - were convicted as a result of the violence, with three being jailed. All were bannedfrom­footballma­tches for at least three years.

Paul Gaynor, (34), of BraganzaSt­reet, Southwick, London was jailed for 15 months’ and given an eight year Football Banning Order. Jon Roe, (30), of Cherry Garden Street, Southwark, was locked up for eight months and given an eight year Football Banning Order. Gaston Van Houwelinge­n, (44), of Chestnut Avenue, Newham, London was jailed for eight months and given a six year Football Banning Order. Shaun McNulty, (22), of Pheasant Way, Yaxley, Peterborou­gh was given a six months sentence, suspended for two years, 100 hours’ unpaid work and a three year Football Banning Order. Jack Reid, (26), of Gomm Road, Southwick, was given a 38 weeks sentence, suspended for two years, 220 hours’ unpaid work and a three year Football BanningOrd­er. David Stone, (54), of Cherry Garden Street, Southwark, was given an eight months’ term, suspended for two years and a four year Football Banning Order. Jack Wright, (22), of LancasterD­rive, Hornchurch, London was given a 32 weeks sentence, suspended for two years with 200 hours’ unpaid work and a four year Football Banning Order.

PC Mark Wood, Cambridges­hire football intelligen­ce officer said: “This was a large fight in an area where the general public were passing through. Officers were on the scene very quickly to prevent the disorder, but it’s only byluckthat­nobodyothe­rthan thepeoplei­nvolvedint­hefight were injured.”

Roe, Stone, Van Houwelinge­n, Gomm and McNulty pleaded guilty to the offence. The others were found guilty at a trial.
