Construction work to build dozens of new homes on the old Peterborough District Hospital site has begun. The old hospital was closed down six years ago, before being demolished last year to make way for the new housing development.

Work has now started on the first phase of the Oakthorpe development.

The fist part of the new estate will include 43 new homes of various sizes - from one bedroom to four bedroom.

Planning permission has been granted for 350 new houses in the area in total.

The development is being built by Kier Living, and the firm’s Eastern sales and marketing director David Thomas said: “Building homes at t he former hospital site will provide comprehensive regeneration of the area to the west of the city centre.

“This is an exciting project for Kier Living Eastern and we will be creating a high quality residential neighbourhood and much needed new housing for Peterborough.”

Along with the homes, a new building for West Town Primary School has been built, which will have room for more than 600 pupils.

Showhomes will be ready to view in March with first completions expected in May or June.

Mr Thomas said their had already been a large amount of interest in the new development. He said: “Oakthorpe is a fantastic collection of family homes which we expect to become part of the Peterborough community when they start to be completed next year.

“We expect demand to be high for these homes and would urge interested homebuyers to come along early and see what is going to be on offer.”

Lands Improvement bought the 23-acre site for £7.75 million in 2013.

While planning permission for the development was granted in July 2014, the administrative core of the Memorial Hospital wing, built in homage to the fallen of the Great War, was meant to remain untouched .

But a detailed application passed in August agreed that it could be largely demolished and re-built
